What you will be doing

This is an exciting opportunity to provide quality breeding research to add value to a breeding programme that is delivering world class fruit cultivars in partnership with Pacific Berries (USA). You will apply your technical leadership and mentoring of the berryfruit breeding team along with managing practical aspects of the programme including planning crosses, raising seed, management of seedling selection trials, fruit harvesting and evaluations. You will assist the Berryfruit Program Leader to develop budgets, set strategic directions and project plan according to research objectives. Working collaboratively with labs, nurseries and our international partners you will maintain existing germplasm collections, manage data and write reports for plant patent applications.

What you will need

To be successful in this role, you will have a postgraduate degree, preferably a PhD, that is Plant Breeding or Genetics related, or an an undergraduate science degree, combined with significant relevant practical experience in breeding horticultural or related berry crops. Your passion for fruit crop research that meets the needs of the modern producer and consumer combined with your practical and problem solving skills will be essential. Strong leadership and collaboration skills along with excellent communication will see you developing our local field team as well as collaborating with our international partners. Willingness to undertake physically demanding work in an organised and methodical way and the ability to travel internationally will be essential in the position.
