The Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health offers a range of programmes from entry level through to master’s degrees for those working in or seeking careers in the wider health and wellbeing sectors. These include certificate level programmes in health and wellbeing, the New Zealand Diploma in Enrolled Nursing, bachelor’s degrees in nursing, midwifery, social work, medical imaging, osteopathy and applied sciences, graduate certificate and diploma programmes and post graduate certificates, diplomas and master’s degrees in health science and nursing.

The Department has over 1500 full time equivalent students and a staff of over 100 highly qualified professionals, many of whom are active researchers. Programmes are offered at Manawa, the City campus and in Timaru. In September 2018 the nursing, programmes moved to Manawa a new purpose-built facility in the Health Precinct / Te Papa Hauora. This is an exciting innovation where Ara is co-located with staff, students and researchers from the University of Canterbury and the Canterbury District Health Board in the Manawa building. The facility includes modern learning environments and a state-of-the-art Simulation Centre catering for interprofessional learning experiences and entry level students through to senior health professionals.


The Role

Academic Staff Member – Teach in the areas of Human and Cell Biology and Basic Chemistry, in the Health pathways of NZ Certificate in Study and Career Prep (Level 4 and Level 3)  An opportunity to teach into other programmes in the department e.g. Lab Science and/or Animal Science may arise.



  • Undertake students’ assessments and provide supervision, guidance and pastoral care to students
  • Participate in the continuous improvement culture by recommending change and improvement to improve efficient delivery of operational and strategic goals
  • Responsible for planning and preparation for teaching and learning, marking student assessments and administrative tasks such as recording and entering student results
  • Contribute to and participation in projects



  • An undergraduate degree in a related discipline
  • Teaching experience at tertiary or secondary level, in Human Biology, Chemistry or a related discipline
  • Digital literacy including – competence using a computer (including Microsoft office products)
  • Time management skills, including the ability to effectively and efficiently administer, organise and co-ordinate activities and meet deadlines
  • Effective communication  with a diverse range of others, at all levels within and outside the organisation
