New Zealand Police Road strategy is about focusing on the safety of all road users. To ensure this is implemented across the commercial road user industry, Police have established the Commercial Vehicle safety Team (CVST). The group specialises in implementing that strategy by focusing on Heavy Motor Vehicle, Passenger service vehicles and other vehicles used by operators to carry out commercial business.

There are four regional teams, the Area 1 team is responsible for the area between Cape Reinga and Mercer (North Waikato). The main office for this area is currently located in Stanley Street, Auckland City. The team is small, mobile and effective.

The Area 1 team is managed by a Senior Sergeant of Police and is supported by an Intelligence Analyst, both of whom are also at the Stanley Street office.

Road Policing is an exciting environment, Police have a number of strategic partners who include the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), the National Road Carriers (Inc) and the Road Transport Association.
