We handle complaints against government agencies, review decisions under the official information legislation, undertake investigations, carry out monitoring and inspections under human rights conventions, and encourage good administration. Mō tō mātou tira – About our team

Our Strategic Advice Team provides high level strategic advice on matters relating to policy and practice, and guidance and training within our Office and to external agencies.  In addition, team members contribute their subject matter expertise and strategic advice in support of communications, knowledge management, research and evaluation and international relations.

Mō te tūranga – About the role

We currently have an opportunity for a 12 month fixed term Advisor in our Strategic Advice Team based in Wellington. You will provide policy and practice advice on matters of significant public interest, with the support of a highly skilled team of Principal Advisors and Senior Advisors. You will assist with the Office’s internal training programme and the implementation of quality assurance processes and systems within the Office. Your understanding of our jurisdiction and excellent analytical and writing skills will be crucial in this role.

He kōrero mōu – About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification, preferably in public or administrative law or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the role of the Ombudsman and the Chief Ombudsman’s strategic priorities.
  • Good understanding and experience of the Ombudsman’s jurisdiction, operating legislation, and investigation and inspection practice.
  • Good understanding of current New Zealand public sector practice, the context in which public sector agencies operate, and the challenges they face.
  • Proven ability to recognise and understand key Māori, disability and other cultural and human rights concepts.
  • Proven research and assessment skills, and analytical and problem solving abilities.
  • Experience in providing strategic, specialist advice.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to express complex and/or controversial ideas clearly, using language and terminology suitably adjusted to the needs of the audience.
  • A proven ability to consistently complete assigned tasks on time and to a high standard.

Depending on skills and experience the salary is expected to be $80,000 to $104,000.
