What you will do
 
In this role you are responsible to the Commanding Officer Operations Squadron for maintaining Whenuapai Aerodrome (NZWP) to an operational standard for military air operations, in accordance with Civil Aviation Regulations (CAR) Part 139 standards (currently non-certificated), applicable International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations, and other relevant guidelines.
 
You will manage airfield activities, facilities and applicable airspace in liaison with key stakeholders, management of the airfield safety programme, and maintaining relevant orders, instructions and publications, including the Base Incident Management Plan.
 
What we need

We are seeking a person with significant (8-10 years) experience in the Aviation Industry including experience in aerodrome operations management, including related wildlife management. Preferably you will have a number of years’ experience in a similar aerodrome management position at a regional or major airport.

You will also have the following: 

  • Advanced knowledge of Civil Aviation Regulations (CAR) in particular CAR Part 139 (Aerodromes – Certification, Operation and Use), ICAO and, and ICAO Annex 14 and associated airfield management publications and obstruction limitation surface standards;
  • A working knowledge of Airfield Wildlife Management Programmes and associated occupational health and safety legislation;
  • Understanding of Safety Management System principles, including knowledge and application of quality assurance systems, processes and audit;
  • Knowledge of both Civil and Military aircraft operational specifications that could utilise Whenuapai Aerodrome. In particular knowledge of Pavement Classification Numbers and Aircraft Classification Numbers.

Having highly developed communication skills you can convey complex and technical information to a wide variety of audiences both verbally and in writing, including an ability to influence others. You are an experienced people manager with a strong leadership ability, valuing the work done by your team.

In terms of qualifications you will at least be Coordinated Incident Management Systems Level 4 (CIMS4) trained; preferably with EOC level training; and able to work with the Emergency Management teams. Ideally you are working towards, a relevant qualification National Certificate in Airport Management or Operations (e.g. National Diploma in Airport Operations Level 5) (Level 4) preferably with strands in Airport Maintenance and Airport Safety as a minimum requirement. You hold a current NZ driver’s licence and a current NZ Firearms Licence.

Due to the nature of the role there are the following requirements:

  • You will need to live locally for callouts and be available to work unsupervised outside of normal work periods to maintain a serviceable aerodrome and execute the Airfield Management Plans at the most effective times. (i.e. Bird control at dawn and dusk, weekend culling, visiting property owners to discuss OLS when they are available);
  • You must be willing and physically able to deploy on exercises within NZ for short periods with RNZAF flying units, in order to provide additional airfield management at smaller airports/airfields, if specifically required. E.g. Ex Skytrain deployed to Alexandra.
