The New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) is responsible for facilitating the legitimate movement of people and goods across the border, supporting trade, managing border risks and collecting customs and excise revenue on behalf of the Crown.

An opportunity is available for a Senior Policy Analyst to join the International Engagement team within the Policy Group. As a Senior Analyst, you will be responsible for the engagement with countries within a specific geographic region, or international organisation. Working closely with our offshore Counsellors, you’ll have a particular focus on developing and maintaining relationships with key agencies in that region.

To be successful in this position you’ll need to demonstrate the following skills and attributes:

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Relationship management
  • An ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

This role offers a great deal of variety, so you’ll need to be able to self-manage while being responsive to overseas counterparts and to the Customs Executive. There is also the requirement to travel from time to time.

Policy positions are rotational and this is an opportunity to start in the International Policy team and work in other areas of Policy.

Applicants must be either a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident, have an appropriate tertiary qualification, or equivalent relevant work experience, and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Successful applicants must be willing to undergo drug testing as part of the selection process.
