Here at the Office of the Ombudsman, we are about fairness for all. The Office handles complaints, carries out investigations, protects the rights of people in detention and provides advice and training to agencies in our goal of helping the NZ public in their dealings with public sector agencies.

We have vacancies for Assistant Investigators in our Intake and Early Assistance Team which is the first point of contact for complainants. The role of the Assistant Investigator is to assist with the following:

  • taking telephone enquiries and complaints from the public and from prisoners on a rostered basis;
  • dealing with written enquiries and complaints, and preparing written responses to them; and
  • where appropriate, initiating communication with the relevant public sector agency or prison to assist with resolving the complaint.

To be successful in this role you will be able to work at pace, quickly ascertain the critical issues, provide advice, and use your exceptional people skills to deal with upset and aggrieved people on the phone.

You will be able to organise, plan and prioritise your work and relish the chance to work in a dynamic and stimulating environment. You must be able to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, demonstrate the ability to positively influence others, communicate effectively and have excellent relationship management skills.

In addition, you will have the following skills:

  • a relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience
  • 1-2 years’ experience successfully operating in a professional/corporate environment
  • some knowledge of central/local government practice
  • strong organisation, prioritisation and time management skills
  • a strong work ethic and high level of integrity
  • excellent verbal communication and ability to prepare appropriate written responses
  • organisation and time management skills
  • analytical and problem solving skills
  • an ability to work under pressure and remain calm and focused when dealing with aggrieved parties
  • an ability to apply utmost discretion in dealing with sensitive information

The salary range for this position is $62,000 to $76,000 gross per annum depending on skills and experience.
