The Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ) grants and and registers designs and trade marks in New Zealand. The role of the patents team is to help people and businesses protect their inventions. Patents are granted to stop others from making, using, or selling a new invention. We operate from Wellington at a great central location on Lambton Quay close to buses, trains, and great food.

 

A patent examiners job is diverse and interesting

If you enjoy working with and learning about technology then you should consider a career as a patent examiner.  We are looking for people with a relevant qualification or industry experience in mechanical engineering or a related technical field to join our Mechanical Team as Associate Patent Examiners.

 

An associate patent examiner is the first step towards becoming a patent examiner.  We will provide you with comprehensive training to start you in your new career.

 

In your work you will assess patent applications covering the latest technology. During your assessment you will carry out database searches and technical literature reviews. You will report on whether the invention in a patent application is new and inventive.

 

Patent examiners in the Mechanical Team focus on goods manufactured by industry or the methods used for the manufacture of those goods. The patent applications examined are varied and diverse, for example, relating to ships, engines, medical equipment, fabric, containers, bridges, air bags, ladders, plumbing, buildings, fishing, milking, ground remediation, optics, and even new wheels.

 

We are looking for people trained in engineering or a related technical field

You would be a great candidate if you:

  • Have a relevant qualification or industry experience in engineering or related technical field
  • Have a genuine interest in technology
  • Have a desire to learn about intellectual property law
  • Can evaluate complex information quickly to make effective decisions
  • Can clearly communicate complex ideas in written and verbal form

Other things we would also be interested in are:

  • Technical or business writing skills
  • Experience in training or coaching others
