ESR has approximately 400 staff with sites across New Zealand.We are currently seeking someone with a great attitude and the skills to match to take up a fulltime role within our Health & Environment team in Christchurch.Your new roleYou will have a key role in the ongoing implementation of bioinformatics at ESR with a particular focus on applications to the domains of public health, food and water. ESR has invested in Illumina MiSeq, NextSeq and Oxford Nanopore Technologies’ GridIONss which are being used to sequence bacterial and viral genomes for outbreak investigation, public health surveillance, investigation of environmental and factory contamination, and a range of research projects. We are also implementing both targeted and shotgun metagenomic analysis which is being applied to an even larger range of areas.Your job will be dynamic, changing, interesting, and very relevant to making a genuine impact to health and wellbeing in New Zealand. Over the next year you are likely to be part of teams who are genome sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 from clinical cases and sewage, investigating Listeria outbreaks, investigating antimicrobial resistance in bacteria, evaluating microbial communities in rivers, groundwater, sewage, food and clinical samples using metagenomics.While you will be the primary Christchurch based bioinformatician at ESR, you will be part of a larger ESR Bioinformatic team (Based in Wellington and Auckland) who you will meet virtually at least weekly and collaborate with on most projects.You willProvide support and training to the ESR scientists around bioinformatics analysis and data analysis.Carryout bioinformatics analysis as requiredWork with scientists and IT staff to develop and embed tools and pipelines into ESR internal systemsContribute to the development of new funding applicationsPlay an active part in leading the development of genomics within ESRMaintain networks with the New Zealand and international Genomics communities and keep abreast with developments in the communityPublish scientific papers in peer-reviewed literature, most as a co-author, but at least one every year as the lead author.What you’ll need to succeedThe ideal candidate will have a strong biological understanding, ideally with a microbiology focus and experience in the analysis of metagenomic and whole genome sequencing data. You will likely hold an appropriate postgraduate qualification in bioinformatics. You will have intermediate to advanced skills in one or more of Python, R, Perl, Java and shell scripting in the Linux environment. Knowledge of database systems, SQL, noSQL, web technologies like Angular or React and workflow languages such as CWL or Snakemake would be appreciated too.You will need good time management skills, including the ability to prioritise tasks whilst working on multiple projects.
