Summary of the Position

On behalf of the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, the Ministry is seeking candidates who wish to be considered for appointment as the Chair of the Consumer Advocacy Council.

The Consumer Advocacy Council is a newly established Council to advocate on behalf of residential and small business electricity consumers. The Council will operate independently of government, industry participants and regulators. A draft Terms of Reference for the Council can be found on the MBIE website with the application form.

The Ministry is looking for candidates with knowledge of the range of issues affecting households and small business electricity consumers as well as credentials in consumer advocacy or related skills.

The Council will be supported by a secretariat housed in the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, to provide analytical support. Once a Chair has been appointed, the recruitment of Council members will commence.

An appointment in relation to the Consumer Advocacy Council is conditional on the priorities of the new Government post-election.

Fees and allowances determined by the Minister are in accordance with the Cabinet fees framework for members appointed to bodies in which the Crown has an interest. Currently the daily fees are set between $390 and $885.

Please note this is a contestable process and applications will be assessed according to the skills and experience the Council requires at this particular time. MBIE supports diversity and welcomes applicants from all regions, sectors and backgrounds.

Candidates wishing to put forward an expression of interest should enclose a copy of their CV and submit a cover letter outlining why they wish to be the Chair of the Consumer Advocacy Council. Please refer to the attached position description for more details.
