Chief Advisor – Wellington


The Government has established the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-based Institutions (the Inquiry). 


The Royal Commission will impact all social and justice Crown agencies involved with children, young people and vulnerable adults in care. Crown agencies have begun to collectively prepare to respond to the Royal Commission. 


A cross-functional team has been set up to lead Oranga Tamariki’s engagement with the Royal Commission. 


About the role: 


The Chief Advisor for the Inquiry, will provide leadership for Oranga Tamariki’s input and support for the Inquiry. The Chief Advisor will be responsible for bringing together the required expertise, knowledge, information and skills from across Oranga Tamariki to ensure high quality, timely support for all aspects of the inquiry relating to Oranga Tamariki.  


Key priorities for the role are:


  • Provide support to the DCE to lead all aspects of Oranga Tamariki’s contribution to the Inquiry’s work 
  • To define the nature of support needed for the Inquiry and to work across Oranga Tamariki to scope, resource and manage an appropriate and timely response
  • To bring together and manage a small specialist team that has the skills and experience needed to provide high quality support for the Inquiry
  • To support cross-Ministry processes that ensure appropriate governance, decision-making and risk management
  • Prepare and present reports to the OT Royal Commission Steering Group
  • To participate in cross agency initiatives and working groups to enable Oranga Tamariki in supporting the effective operation of the Inquiry
  • Proactively identify and manage any implications and requirements for Oranga Tamariki


The successful applicant will play a key role to build trust and confidence in the overall Oranga Tamariki response.  


This is a 12 months fixed term position, secondments will be considered.
