Established in 1993, Maritime New Zealand is a Crown entity with regulatory, compliance and response accountabilities for the safety, security and environmental protection of New Zealand’s maritime environment. The organisation’s vision is ‘A maritime community that works and plays safely and securely on clean waters’. Approximately 290 staff operate from a Wellington-based head office and thirteen regional offices.
The organisation has a kaitiaki role, with its mandate to make life at sea safer, to protect the maritime environment from pollution, to safeguard it for future generations, and to ensure ports, commercial vessels and the people who work and play on our waters are safe and secure.
Maritime NZ seeks to enhance the value and effectiveness of its modern regulatory and compliance functions, and also works to positively influence the international regulatory environment. The organisation also has operational accountability, including overseeing a national search and rescue coordination service and a comprehensive pollution preparedness and response service.
The Board is seeking to appoint a high-calibre Chief Executive to take the organisation forward and further develop its capability and performance as ‘A professional, evidence-based, intelligence-led, risk-focused regulatory, compliance and response agency’.
