About Crown Law

Crown Law is at the heart of the New Zealand public service. We have been providing services to Government for over 140 years. With some of the most important legal work in New Zealand, every day our staff are providing legal advice to departments and Ministers, appearing in the highest courts and supporting the Solicitor General to deliver on her constitutional role. We also provide leadership for the networks of Crown Solicitors, public prosecuting agencies and the more than 850 lawyers who work in Government.

About the role

The Chief People Officer (CPO) reports to the Deputy Chief Executive, Strategy and Corporate and is responsible for developing and executing a human resources strategy in support of the overall strategic direction of the organisation.

The CPO will provide leadership on people-related needs and will work collaboratively with the Solicitor General and the Leadership Team to build organisational performance and culture.

The CPO leads a high-performing HR team, developed on a business partnering model, and is responsible for a full suite of workplace relations and people matters including workforce planning, recruitment, induction, employment relations, remuneration, recognition and reward, Health and Safety, leadership development, training, change management and payroll.

About you

The ideal appointee will have the following skills, qualities and experience:

  • Ideally at least 10 years progressive human resource generalist experience with more than five years at management level.
  • A tertiary qualification and professional achievement in business or human resource management or a related discipline
  • Hands-on experience across the broad range of human resources activities, including workforce strategy development and implementation, operations, organisational development, employment relations and change and analysis
  • Demonstrated proficiency with applicable laws/regulations and management theories: including policy/procedure development; union activities; strong organisational skills in the areas of operations, budget and project administration; effective interface with diverse groups utilising your employment relations and emotional intelligence skills and effective supervisory skills
