The Team: What we do

The Canterbury Regional Forensic Psychiatric Service is dedicated to assessing and treating people that have offended in the context of a mental disorder or may be at risk of doing so. It also caters for prisoners that require mental health assessment and treatment. There are a number of units and teams which include two medium secure inpatient units, an open rehabilitation inpatient unit, and a community and prison team.

There is a large emphasis on supportive peer review of our practice, including court reports. The service is also committed to ensuring evidence-based approaches and providing clinicians fantastic opportunities for further professional development.

We are offering a fantastic opportunity for an NZ Registered Psychologist to become a key member of a collaborative service providing for the needs of individuals in our care and the wider community. This is a permanent, full-time (40hr per week) opportunity located at Hillmorton Hospital. The days and hours associated with this position are Monday – Friday, approximately 0800 – 1630 (there may be some flexibility around start and finish times).

The Role: Where you fit in

In this role, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Ongoing assessment of risk of violence and mental health difficulties, formulation, and individual and group interventions
  • There is a leadership component including the running of in-service trainings and working with the team to provide guidance on patient management
  • Prepare comprehensive reports for the courts as an expert witness. The reports address matters related to fitness to stand trial, the question of insanity, and sentencing recommendations

Your skills will include the following:

  • The ability to work both autonomously and as a part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Applicants will need to be a New Zealand registered Clinical Psychologist with current Annual Practising Certificate (or eligibility to obtain)
  • Ideally, successful applicants will have recent experience in a forensic mental health setting with knowledge of the legal system and legislation relating to mental health
  • We will also consider applications from clinical psychologists from other areas that can demonstrate specific relevant transferable skills
  • As there is some travel required in this position, a full NZ driver’s licence is essential
