Our Purpose: Why we do it

When you work with the Canterbury District Health Board, you’re part of something very special. We plan, fund and deliver health services to the almost 600,000 New Zealanders that live in the Canterbury region. Our primary goal is to put people at the heart of everything we do.

The Team: What we do

The Community Mental Health Nurse role at Youth Forensic team (YFT) is to provide psychiatric and AOD consultation, screening and assessment as required for Youth Court, Youth Drug Court and Rangatahi Court within Christchurch, Ashburton and Rangiora. There is also a case management component to this role. As part of the YFT you will contribute to the continued development of the provision of forensic care within the CDHB Specialist Mental Health Services.

Drawing on your mental health nursing experience will be fundamental to providing consultation and management advice to the Youth Justice Residential facility (Te Puna Wai o Tuhinapo) for their interactions and care of the challenging young people admitted there.

For this position staff are appointed to the Child, Adolescent and Family service first, and while they will based in the Youth Forensic Team, they could be required to work at the CAF service if there is need.

The Role: Where you fit in

The Youth Forensic team at CDHB is looking to appoint an experienced Community Mental Health Nurse. A motivated and flexible self-starter, you will enjoy meeting the challenges of working both autonomously and as part of a team to develop sound working relationships with our many community partners/agencies whom you will be liaising with. The ability to work in close collaboration with the youth, their family/whanau, other team members as well as partnering organisations is imperative to effectively engage appropriate clinical interventions for this vulnerable client group.

With sound psychiatric assessment skills and a robust knowledge of relevant legislation including Child, Youth and Family Act, MHA, Criminal Justice Act, your ability to accurately identify risk and plan and advise appropriate management strategies will be exceptional. YFT has mentoring and training opportunities for new and existing staff so don’t be scared. Prior experience in a mental health setting is important though.

The successful candidate will have an ability to build strong effective relationships with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, will be organised and methodical in their approach to administration and time management, and will have flexibility and adaptability to meet the changeable nature of your work.

A current full NZ driver’s licence is required for this position.
