The National Prevention Centre (NPC) is looking for a dynamic, motivated, strategic thinker to join the team as the National Coordinator for Youth Development. The NPC is future focused and committed to enabling Districts to deliver on ‘Our Business’. This is an exciting opportunity to grow into this role, develop strong partnerships and to influence and enable staff to provide better outcomes for Youth.  You will be working with a high performing, innovative and committed team. The successful applicant will be instrumental in reviewing current Youth Development programmes and leading and embedding change in respect to future programmes.


This position is challenging and provides multiple opportunities including leading product review and enhancement, project management and training. This position is unique and will require a highly engaged positive attitude to build relationships with key decision makers and practitioners in the twelve Districts. There is an expectation that the successful applicant will possess the skills required to excel in the role. Ideally the right applicant will have the following skills and experience.


This position reports to Manager:  Youth and Schools and has no direct reports


Skills – you will be able to:

  • Work with the Prevention Manager: Harm Reduction and Manager Youth and Schools to facilitate, lead and support the delivery of Youth Development programmes
  • Identify, build and maintain effective strategic partnerships with a broad range of stakeholders including District and frontline staff
  • Collect, analyse and disseminate information (both written and verbal) in a clear and concise way to assist decision makers and support staff
  • Conduct extensive research into successful techniques and development nationally and internationally that may be relevant to the management or implementation of particular initiatives
  • Build strong and long lasting relationships to ensure service delivery
  • Research organisational needs, relevant theories, trends and best practises externally to ensure best practise is being applied in all initiatives
  • Create a compelling vision to motivate others to follow your lead
  • Identify problems, generate solutions and make decisions
  • Recognise and respond to individual differences and diversity
  • Develop strategies to reduce Youth/Maori/Volume/Traffic offending



Experience – you will have:

  • A comprehensive understanding and currency in Youth Development/Engagement practises, Youth justice and alternative action or supported resolutions
  • Demonstrated that you have either created, facilitated or delivered a successful project
  • Worked with stakeholders, end users, and customers to understand their needs and goals
  • Acted as a champion for products by displaying solid understanding for users and future trends
  • Demonstrated the ability to engage with and be responsive to partners
  • Build and enhance effective relationships with customers/service providers to maintain and enhance respect and trust
