NIWA’s Fisheries Centre provides research advice to increase economic growth through the sustainable management and use of aquatic resources and enhance the stewardship of New Zealand’s freshwater and marine ecosystems and biodiversity.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide professional support for NIWA’s fisheries research databases and the data they contain. The position is a combination of an operational and programming role. It involves running scripts to load data into databases, resolving data errors and maintaining data quality. Good SQL skills are required. A strong programming background is required to maintain the current system and write new programs as requirements change. The role also involves supporting research staff requiring data extracts from the databases.
Suitable candidates should have tertiary qualifications in information technology and a minimum of three years’ experience in programming, including SQL, Bash, Python and working in a Linux environment. Experience with Perl would be advantageous. They should be enthusiastic, be able to work with minimal supervision, prioritise workloads and show high levels of judgement and adaptability, while working in a team environment.
