The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) acts in the world to make New Zealanders safer and more prosperous. It does this by building connections with and influencing other countries to advance New Zealand’s interests, project New Zealand values and secure the outcomes that matter to New Zealand.
Over 1,700 staff, based in New Zealand and in 60 overseas posts, work to enhance New Zealanders’ well-being through political, security, economic and development engagement with other countries, participating in multilateral and regional organisations that deal with important issues for New Zealand, and delivering consular services for New Zealanders overseas. MFAT also maintains strong domestic connections with New Zealanders to support the pursuit of the country’s international interests.
We are recruiting a Deputy Chief Executive Policy who will lead the Ministry’s strategic direction, ensuring a coherent and clear foreign policy narrative across the Ministry, and that the Ministry is delivering its strategic priorities effectively and efficiently.
The Deputy Chief Executive Policy will be deeply experienced in contemporary foreign, trade and consular policy challenges, with a proven ability to work across systems and lead on significant Ministry and ‘whole-of-government’ issues, and extensive experience in engagement with Ministers and their staff.
In representing the Ministry in security and intelligence activities, and leading foreign policy discussions in New Zealand and offshore, the Deputy Chief Executive Policy will have a strong understanding at a strategic level of the key opportunities and risks for New Zealand in its international relationships, as well as the context in which the Ministry operates.
As a member of the Ministry’s Senior Leadership Team, the Deputy Chief Executive Policy will lead an empowered and engaged team, be an exemplar of the Ministry’s values, and a talent for developing leadership capability within the Ministry’s senior management.
The Deputy Chief Executive Policy will head a Group comprising the following Ministry functions:
• International Security and Disarmament;
• Risk, Governance and Assurance;
• Strategy and Performance;
• Executive Services;
