The Deputy Director supports the NZAGRC Director in the running of the NZAGRC, including the development of business and science plans and the monitoring and assessment of its performance against its Key Performance Indicators. This role has responsibility for implementing complex scientific research and development actions that require a high degree of critical thinking and the fusion of ideas from different disciplines. Successful outcomes from the research programme will result in new practices and technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock production systems, particularly ruminant livestock.

Duties include:

  • Developing new, collaborative greenhouse gas mitigation research programmes
  • Negotiating and contracting research programmes
  • Assessing quality and delivery of science inputs against programme milestones
  • Contributing to the delivery of domestic and international research contracts
  • Providing underpinning knowledge on climate change and climate change policy
  • Establishing sound working relations and collaboration with key stakeholders
  • Ensuring research contracted by the NZAGRC is of the highest standard
  • Your ideal background

  • PhD degree in a climate change related discipline with particular emphasis on agricultural greenhouse gas mitigation from ruminant livestock
  • Proven track record of research and development in agriculture
  • Demonstrated leadership, management, scientific, communication and relationship skills and a strong familiarity with the working of government departments and international science and policy fora
  • Experienced in the establishment and maintenance of strong and effective partnerships with individuals and organisations nationally and internationally
  • Experience in negotiation, administration and monitoring of research contracts and research outputs
  • Working knowledge of evidence informed policy development
