Pacific and Development Group – Development Legal Counsel

The New Zealand Aid Programme delivers a broad range of development projects globally and so you’ll need to enjoy a fast paced and diverse work environment.

You’ll have comprehensive legal experience in a commercial and contracting environment.  As a key member of a small collegial legal team, you’ll be customer focused and self-motivated, comfortable working within a team and autonomously.

You’ll be a person who enjoys interacting directly with others. One of your key skills will be an ability to translate complex legal analysis and advice for your non-legal customers.

Kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role

  • You’ll provide considered, high quality, timely and practical legal advice to support contracting and the delivery of the aid programme.
  • You’ll support complex contract negotiations, troubleshooting and dispute resolution.
  • You’ll proactively build and foster excellent working relationships within the Ministry.

wai te mahi nei? – Who are we looking for?

  • You’ll have a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), at least 6 years post admission legal experience and hold a New Zealand Practising Certificate.
  • You’ll have significant sole-lead experience in advising on, designing, drafting and negotiating commercial contract documentation.
  • You’ll be confident and credible, able to provide logical and evidenced analysis and advice.
  • You’ll enjoy building sustainable, responsive relationships with a broad range of people who have diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • You’ll be passionate about mentoring and coaching staff to support the continual improvement of contract and commercial acumen within the business.
  • Experience working in an international environment would be desirable.
