In this senior role you will lead the monitoring and planning functions that shape the focus of DOC’s biodiversity programme. The information and innovations you oversee will help the Department and its partners to deliver the most impactful approaches to biodiversity. 


The directorate you will lead has a broad role.  It oversees the evidence base that allows biodiversity work in New Zealand to be targeted to the greatest gains.  It also includes the team responsible for technical innovations such as dummy kākāpō eggs that have dramatically improved breeding success.


Science and environmental monitoring are a clear focus.  But you will also need to work closely with a range of partners including Ministry for the Environment, local councils and iwi.  You will need to shape your monitoring programme and translate the results to ensure that it shapes decision making.


We are seeking an experienced leader who can provide relevant examples of delivering innovation and influence with measurable outcomes.  A history of working through partners and leading multi-disciplinary teams is essential. 


Ideally you will have experience in science (particularly its translation into decision making) or conservation (particularly an understanding of biodiversity).  But you don’t need to be a specialist in this area.  Experience working with iwi would be a significant advantage.
