About the Role 

We are currently looking for directors in the Strategy and Stewardship or the Water area.  The roles will take on system leadership of some of some very important pieces of work being undertaken at the Ministry.  We are also looking for a director in the Natural and Built System where you will be part of an integrated approach to the natural and built system across resource management (RMA) national direction, urban water and three waters, air quality, biodiversity,forestry, highly productive land and approaches to compliance, monitoring and enforcement (CME).

A Director at MfE bridges the gap between strategy and delivery, the future and the present.  A key accountability is to translate strategy into action that your teams can put in place today.  They provide judgement and direction in an operating context that is often ambiguous and complex, and politically charged. 

The Director role reports to the relevant Deputy Secretary and is a member of the Ministry’s Senior Leadership Team.  At MfE our Directors team ‘run the business’ and work collaboratively to achieve shared organisational outcomes.

Directors lead on some of MfE’s key relationships with iwi/Māori, and the role provides an opportunity for those with knowledge and experience in this area to bring it to bear in contemporary policy issues.  They also front and manage relationships with other organisations, stakeholders and government agencies

It is expected that Directors at MfE will be flexible to work across other areas of the Ministry as business or development needs require.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for these roles:

  • you will have experience leading and managing key areas of policy development, that will include cross agency collaboration and legislative development and experience working with key stakeholders including iwi and the youth.
  • you will need a background working at a ministerial level and have led significant policy work programmes and a solid understanding of science and data.
  • you will have a strong background leading the strategic and business direction of a directorate and building the capability of policy teams is preferred
  • you will have a record of being innovative and finding new ways of doing things through your leadership
  • you will be aware of your leadership strengths and areas for development, and be working to strengthen both.
  • you will have an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and commitment to partnering with Māori for success

Salary range for this role is $192,731 – $249,417.  Appointment within these ranges will be based on skills and experience.
