Kōrero mō te tūranga – About the Role

Reporting to the Deputy Director-General Biosecurity New Zealand, this is a pivotal role providing leadership for the delivery of New Zealand’s readiness for potential pests and diseases, response to issues and threats, our recovery mechanisms and long term pest management. New Zealand’s biosecurity system is vital – our country is unique, and we need to protect it. 

You will be a senior leader with a proven track record of delivery to lead this busy function. You will have worked in a large, complex organisation and managed teams that can deliver across the organisation.


Key duties for the role:

  • Ensure delivery of strategic readiness, response, recovery and pest management goals
  • Ensure all readiness and response functions manage resources efficiently and cost effectively
  • Support the directorate’s mission and purpose to ensure they are aligned with government priorities and MPI’s organisational strategy
  • Provide leadership and management to all staff within the Directorate
  • Support the DDG Biosecurity New Zealand, contributing to organisational leadership of the branch, and across MPI
  • Deliver MPI’s baseline obligations and objectives by maintaining strategic oversight and development of Government Industry Agreements (GIA)
  • Ensure MPI is meeting its obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi
  • Ensure MPI is connected in matters affecting the National Security Coordinator System


Mōu – About You

To be successful you will need to demonstrate a wide variety of skills and experience including excellent stakeholder management, proven financial acumen and people leadership:

  • Post-graduate level qualification – qualification in emergency management is desired
  • Experience in the leadership of strategically important and cross-organisation initiatives and proven experience in a senior management role
  • Knowledge of New Zealand’s national security framework
  • Successful experience in development and implementation of readiness, response, and recovery leadership strategies and management functions
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of legislation, policies, procedures, processes and codes of conduct for government and the public sector
  • Effective communication and presentation skills with demonstrable ability to handle media relations
  • People leadership and management skills
  • Proven financial management skills, including understanding of government financial management processes

Salary range for this role is $207,000 to $244,000 depending on skills and experience
