What you will do

The mission of the National Museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy Te Waka Huia o Te Taua Moana is to gather, protect, and share the Navy’s memory and stories – past, present, and future – and to inform and inspire our sailors, our naval community and all New Zealanders.

You’ll be responsible for developing and delivering formal and informal educational programmes and learning opportunities that are responsive to the needs of the Navy Museum and the Museum’s key communities, including New Zealand Defence Force personnel, school groups and visiting families.

The Educator inspires children and adults through interdisciplinary, hands-on, fun experiences that provide access to our naval history and the Navy Museum’s Collections.

The Educator helps us achieve our Learning and Education Mission: To deliver engaging programmes for all learners. Through exploring the stories of our Navy, we empower learners to make meaning of the world.

Please note:  This is a fixed term position covering parental leave until March 2022.

What we need

An experienced educator who is able to work with a diverse range of students using a variety of media and pedagogical methods. Ideally, you will have worked in an educational role within a museum setting, giving you the skills to deliver fun and engaging learning experiences outside of the classroom.

A key focus for this position in 2021 is the delivery of education sessions to Navy personnel. You must bring a keenness for engaging adults in learning experiences.

You will be familiar with the development and implementation of strategies designed to enhance education programmes. Excellent relationship management skills are key in this role as you will liaise with a variety of community stakeholders. The Navy Museum plays a very important role as a national museum for the Royal New Zealand Navy. We are also very active in our local community.

You will bring a knowledge of New Zealand history, particularly military history combined with an awareness of Taonga Maori, Te Reo and cultural issues within the museum context. You will be joining a fantastic organisation with a collaborative, fast paced and creative learning environment.

Who we are

The Navy Museum’s mission is to capture and preserve New Zealand’s naval culture and heritage for current and future generations through collection, preservation, presentation, education, research and scholarship.
