KiwiRail is New Zealand’s national railway. It’s an exciting time for us with the surge of investment in New Zealand rail, and we are building high performing teams to reach our full potential for the future. We move around 25% of New Zealand’s exports, transport more than one million tourists and helps enable 34 million commuter journeys a year. To support this, our Engineering and Planning team are responsible for maintaining 4,000kms of the rail corridor, bridges, tunnels, viaducts, overhead wires, signals and level crossings throughout New Zealand. In this role you will work with the Engineering Design Manager to provide the design services for major rail new build projects in New Zealand and deliver the design for these projects across the relevant engineering discipline. Key to this role will be the ability to develop engineering designs that are creative, sustainable and include innovative solutions which meet the future needs rail services in New Zealand. This is a key leadership role with accountability for scoping the design and the design outputs including liaison and working collaboratively with the Strategic Project Directors and their representatives up front and during the design and ensuring the management of the design to meet commercial expectations.

To be considered for this role we are seeking applications from seasoned engineering design professionals within rail infrastructure looking to take a leading role in infrastructure and rail design in NZ. You will be an experienced track designer with proven skills in leading design projects from concept to completion, with the ability to translate ideas to designers and design teams. Naturally you will have solid leadership skills who has worked in a senior capacity design lead role, who can scope and design outputs working collaboratively with immediate and wider teams throughout the project design cycle. Supported by this will be your strong working knowledge of online and offline design, brand development and the creative process and you will have excellent communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to present to external and internal stakeholder. A relevant engineering tertiary qualifications is essential and with ideally CPEng. Rail experience an advantage.
