We are looking for an enthusiastic field soil surveyor to help us map and investigate New Zealand’s valuable soil and land resources.

About the opportunity

The role will support research and consultancy into soil and landscape mapping, modelling, and information management, to support and verify sustainable and wise use of natural assets.

The position is open term (permanent) and full time. You will report to a Capability Leader within the Soils & Landscapes team. The position will be based at Palmerston North. While we are most interested in recent graduates able to excel in the field, we are open to the consideration of more qualified or experienced applicants, with job size reproportioned accordingly.

About you

You will have, at minimum, a recent Bachelor-level qualification in soil science, environmental science or a related discipline, with some experience in field operations. You will have an understanding of soil description and classification systems, and ideally an ability to describe and sample soils according to New Zealand standards. On-the-job training in these standards is available to those with less specific experience but a strong interest in the subject. An ability to liaise successfully with farmers, Māori landowners, and regional councils is required. The role requires a high level of physical fitness and availability to travel throughout New Zealand on multi-day field exercises.
