MPI has vacancies for Observers engaged on an agreement by agreement basis to carry out seagoing observation and data collection duties.

 

Observers are critical to New Zealand’s world leading fisheries management regime. They monitor the environmental impact of fishing activity and record accurate and reliable data relating to vessel catch and processing.

 

Because of the nature of New Zealand’s fisheries the successful applicants will be engaged on agreements which may comprise of multiple short duration trips on smaller New Zealand vessels or longer duration trips on larger New Zealand vessels. A high level of flexibility and availability is required to become part of our great team of more than 100 observers.

 

You must have the ability to collect and compile field data and be able to live and work in a seagoing environment. You will also have high levels of report writing skills, note taking and data collection skills and act as an ambassador for MPI. Seagoing experience and knowledge of New Zealand fisheries are desirable.

 

The vacancies for Observer positions are based in Auckland, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, and Dunedin. Applicants do not need to reside in these locations to be able to apply for one of these positions. If you were successful in obtaining an Observer position, you would be required to present yourself at the closest Ministry Office from the locations listed above to where you live to accept each employment agreement offered for Observer duties.

 

Shortlisted candidates will need to complete a digital interview, further shortlisted candidates will then need to attend a one day assessment centre in Wellington. Dates for the assessment centre are to be confirmed, but you would need to attend one of a possible three dates between December 5th and December 13th, 2018.  Successful applications must be able to attend a comprehensive three (3) week training course starting on 27th January 2019. You will need to undergo a medical assessment, drug and alcohol testing, and you should be available to go to sea straight after the training course is complete.
