About the position

This is a unique opportunity for a talented leader to provide strategic direction and leadership to a newly formed branch.

This is a new position leading the Economic Development and Transitions branch which is responsible for providing integrated policy advice to Government on economic development, industry and investment policy, supporting regional growth and small business, and how to support economic adjustment to issues such as the future of work and the transition to a low emissions economy.  As General Manager EDT,you report directly to the Deputy Chief Executive – Labour Science and Enterprise (LSE), and are a member of the LSE senior leadership team.

You will work with a range of internal and external stakeholders; Ministers and Minister’s offices, iwi and Māori stakeholders, industry and employee groups, other government departments and wider MBIE colleagues.

We are combining our key strengths with new talent to deliver outcomes in a complex and challenging environment and you will play a key part in this through the use of collaboration and relationship partnering.


Key skills/experience required

  • Ability to quickly establish and build strong working relationships and to develop and maintain effective relationships with Ministers, senior public service officials, internal and external stakeholders
  • Proven leadership skills including demonstrated ability to engage and motivate staff and an ability to build a strong high performing team in a complex organisation
  • Experience leading the development and delivery of policy advice
  • Relevant tertiary qualification and extensive and comparable experience
  • Demonstrated ability to manoeuvre though complex political situations effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to keep inquiring and learning under pressure or in situations with high ambiguity
  • A strategic thinker who is able to make the connections between various aspects of the organisation and implications for their work programmes
