The Team: What we do

Community and Public Health provides public health services to people living in Canterbury, South Canterbury and West Coast regions. We aim to improve the health of our communities and reduce inequalities in health status.

As part of our WAVE (Well-being and Vitality in Education) team working in our Community and Public Health Timaru office, as a Health Promoter you’ll work in partnership with education and community agencies to promote healthy nutrition and healthy lifestyles with a focus on Oral Health for under 5’s. Your role may also include providing a home visit oral health service to under 5’s and their families.

This is a fixed-term, full-time opportunity (40 hours per week) covering parental leave until approximately March 2021. The days and hours required for this position are Monday – Friday with flexible start and finish times.

The Role: Where you fit in

In this role, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Working with the WAVE team (focused on education settings) to improve health and wellbeing with a focus on nutrition and oral health
  • Working in collaboration with external agencies to deliver health promotion programmes
  • Participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of projects as decided by the wider team
  • Provide health promotion advice and support to internal and external stakeholders

Your skills will include the following:

  • A commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and to working in a bi-cultural manner
  • Experience in community based or health promotion projects,or a relevant qualification in health promotion is essential
  • Project planning and implementation experience within a community setting is highly desirable
  • Experience with Early Childhood Education would be an advantage
  • The ability to build and nurture trusted professional relationships with external agencies is essential
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Competent computer skills
  • As some travel will be required, a current driver’s licence is essential
