Health & Safety Officer (Fisheries)

  • Newly created permanent full time position
  • This is a pivotal role in the building of strong and enduring Health and Safety (H&S) practices within the Fisheries Compliance business
  • National travel as required + flexible working
  • Nationwide – position can be based at any of MPI’s main offices (Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch)


The Fisheries Compliance team is currently seeking a Health & Safety Officer.

This position will play a key role in delivery of H&S advice to the Fisheries Compliance business and the development and implementation of health and safety procedures and processes and lead H&S practice and culture.

This will require the development of collaborative working relationships with the primary focus of this role being to uplift and maintain health, safety and wellbeing capability amongst the Fisheries Compliance workforce and ensure health and safety systems within the business are operating lawfully and effectively.


Some key areas of responsibility include:

  • Ensure the health and safety responsibilities of both the business and wider organisation are being met
  • Lead the delivery of new health and safety systems, policies and procedures
  • Provide expert H&S advice, coaching and mentoring as required.
  • Ensure synergies between MPI and Fisheries Compliance H&S programmes.
  • Monitor and report on health, safety and wellbeing practices and related trends.
  • Implement and maintain a programme of health and safety checks.
  • Administration of the fisheries patrol vessel fleet within NZ’s Maritime Operator Safety System (MOSS) framework.


Skills and experience required:

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field
  • Formal OSH training and experience
  • Experience in development and delivery of H&S strategies, plans, policies and procedures.
  • Excellent written, verbal and communication skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Initiative, technical aptitude and sound judgement and analytical skills
  • Ability to develop and maintaining appropriate relationships with stakeholders.


A security clearance classification to the level of Confidential is required for this position. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain this clearance.
