At the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) the work we do counts – it is challenging, unique and continuously evolving. We ensure better outcomes for investors, consumers and the New Zealand economy through our unwavering commitment to promoting and facilitating fair, efficient and transparent financial markets.
With a strong focus on learning and development, we empower our people to shape their roles. This means you’ll have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive in an environment that encourages expansion and flexibility. We’ll support you to be bold and proactive and we’ll celebrate your achievements and success.
Right now, we’re searching for an exceptional Intermediate Solicitor to join our Enforcement team, within our General Counsel function. Our Enforcement team is responsible for all legal matters pertaining to FMA enforcement action in response to misconduct and contraventions of the law/professional standards within the financial markets.
In this role, you will provide high quality legal advice in relation to the FMA’s investigation of misconduct and apply your expertise in litigation or regulatory enforcement to ensure the FMA’s goals are achieved, and that the enforcement function reinforces the FMA’s reputation as an effective, proactive and respected organisation.
You will be responsible for taking a leadership role on smaller cases, from the investigation phase through to the conclusion of any enforcement actions, including drafting of instructions and management of external Counsel, the Crown and experts. Advocacy opportunities might arise depending on the case, which could also see you appearing at Financial Advisors Disciplinary Committee hearings.
This role is ideally suited to a highly motivated intermediate level solicitor with a background in litigation/regulatory enforcement, however we would consider an experienced financial services lawyer looking to move into litigation. Your tertiary qualification in law, (ideally gained with Honours) and current practising certificate (or entitlement to one) are pre-requisites for the role. A commerce or business degree will be a real asset. You’ll have 4-6 years’ post admission experience at a private law firm or regulator, where you have gained a working knowledge of civil procedure (essential) and/or criminal procedure (desirable). You will also have strong interpersonal skills, enthusiasm and drive.
At the FMA, you’ll be proud knowing that the work you do is creating a legacy for New Zealand. We offer flexible working arrangements and a variety of wellness activities. A strong emphasis is placed on your life outside the workplace, and diversity and inclusion are championed in an environment where we all have the opportunity to reach our full potential.
