About the role:

Are you seeking a new challenge that will utilise your investigations expertise?  This is a real opportunity to make a difference for New Zealand by investigating and prosecuting immigration fraud and identifying ways to make the immigration system safer.

This newly created permanent role is the Verifications and Compliance group within Immigration New Zealand.

As Investigations Manager, you will lead a team of investigators to address both systemic and responsive immigration fraud issues. You will be responsible for the investigation and prosecution of immigration fraud cases brought by Immigration New Zealand and the provision of assistance to partner agencies.

You’ll provide specialist input and advice to identify and address risks to the immigration system, and expert support and advice on complex cases and escalated assessment and investigations, Analysis, experience and judgement will inform your decisions.

You will develop strategies, work programmes and performance targets for the team’s work, and monitor performance against these with your team, establishing clear accountabilities, expectations and performance standards. You’ll build strong relationships within MBIE and with national and international organisations, to identify and share best practice information and ensure MBIE’s views are influential in decision making.

What you will bring to the role:

As Investigations Manager, you will have proven experience in managing complex investigative activity, including modern investigation and regulatory techniques and dealing with complex cases which may include incomplete / ambiguous information. You will demonstrate a strong  track record of achieving results.

We are keen to hear from you if you:

  • Have significant knowledge and experience in the investigation of a range of crimes using modern investigative techniques through to a prosecution or other comprehensive resolution
  • Have experience in developing and maintaining key networks with stakeholders
  • Have led, coached and mentored teams/ individuals to achieve results and professional growth
  • Have applied risk management concepts and techniques to decision-making
  • Have demonstrated ability to lead and influence without formal lines of authority, including in operational contexts
  • Demonstrate a strong action orientation and the proven ability to support cultural change and drive results
  • Have experience in developing and maintaining an environment focused on continuous improvement to enhance team performance and simplify work processes
  • Have a tertiary qualification, preferably in a relevant field or comparable relevant experience
  • Have the legal right to work in New Zealand.


Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET government security clearance. In order to achieve this you must be a New Zealand citizen or resident who has resided continuously in this country for 10 years, OR a citizen of Australia, Canada, The United Kingdom, or The United States of America; and have resided continuously in one or more of those countries for the past 10 years prior to application, with a background history which is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a high level. If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
