The Public Defence Service (PDS) is New Zealand’s largest criminal law practice, providing high quality legal advice and representation in a full range of criminal cases. Aimed at helping all people of New Zealand access justice, the PDS promotes the values of respect, integrity, service and the delivery of excellent service to its clients. PDS lawyers are the voice of some of the most marginalised people in the criminal justice system. 

Right now, the PDS are looking for an outstanding Junior Lawyer, reporting to our Senior Lawyer (Appeals) interested in developing research, submission writing and critical analysis skills, through providing support on Court of Appeal and Supreme Court cases undertaken by the Public Defence Service (PDS).  From time to time, as your workload allows, you may also provide support to other lawyers within the PDS with research, opinion and submission writing.

This role does not include time in court or carrying a case load, although an internal applicant may be able to retain a small caseload.  The position is a 10 month fixed term contract; however, if filled internally, there may be the possibility of two five month contracts.

The successful candidate will ideally join our team in the central Hamilton office, there is the possibility of being based in another PDS office, dependent upon the level of experience of the successful applicant.

Salary range:  $ 51 335 – $60,000
