The Upper South Youth Justice team are excited to announce a new Maori Specialist role in Youth Justice. The Kairaranga-ā-whānau role is a specialist role that works with our team to ensure the whānau fully participate in any decision making with their Rangatahi. The specialised skills the role encompasses are the ability to search for and engage with whānau, knowledge and understanding of whakapapa and the ability to facilitate hui-a-whānau. The team are looking forward to welcoming someone with these specialised skills that supports Rangatahi and whānau who are experiencing the Youth Justice system.

About us

Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children is committed to putting children and young people at the heart of everything we do and say. We value the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi above all else and want to ensure that all tamariki and rangatahi are in loving hanau and communities.

In this role you will do the following:

• Search for whānau – support social workers and coordinators to identify whānau relationships
• Research whakapapa – to identify places of belonging
• Facilitate hui-a whānau – especially prior to Family Group Conferences
• Support rangatahi to be well connected to their whanau
• Assist rangatahi and whānau to be well prepared to participate in all whānau decision making processes
• Where appropriate, support whānau to identify those within the whānau who may be able to offer care to rangatahi
• Support cultural capability building within the site, in partnership with site manager and practice leaders
• Develop and maintain relationships with whānau, hapū, iwi and Māori community

You will bring the following:

• Good understanding and knowledge of Te Ao Māori and te reo me ona tikanga
• Experience in working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, in particular Māori
• Experience in working with whānau, hapū, iwi and Māori community, to gather knowledge of whakapapa
• Established relationships and networks with local Iwi, Marae and community
• The ability to communicate complex ideas to a variety of audiences and build and maintain rapport with others
• The ability to apply the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989
• Excellent computer, verbal, written and interpersonal skills
• A current, full, clean driver’s licence
