Mō tēnei tūrangi mahi | About this role 

Our native freshwater species, habitats, and ecosystems are affected by the way we use our land, the species we have introduced, and the modifications we have made to natural waterways.  

We have introduced a strategy to tackle these issues (https://www.mfe.govt.nz/overview-our-freshwater-2020). 

To support this programme of work, we are looking for a strategic, innovative and experienced leader to work closely with our agency partners and regional councils to implement the Freshwater Strategy. 

You will be looked to for providing fresh, innovative thinking and the new ways of achieving positive outcomes. 

A key focus of the role will be providing technical and analytical leadership, as well as coaching and mentoring the team to build capability. 

The role is highly collaborative and you will need the confidence to develop and manage relationships at all levels across the Ministry, as well as those outside the organisation.  You will represent the Ministry’s viewpoint and be a key part in influencing decision-making.

Our ideal candidate will bring: 

  • experience in the freshwater space
  • demonstrated experience providing strategic and technical advice in a senior role
  • knowledge and understanding of agriculture, including resource management  is desirable
  • a track record  of successfully leading complex policy development and design
  • exceptional communication, influencing and relationship management skills across all levels
  • demonstrated coaching or mentoring experience, with an emphasis on building a positive and inclusive culture
  • the ability to work comfortably in an environment of ambiguity
  • the ability to apply Māori worldviews in a way that makes a meaningful difference to policy advice, partnerships, and relationships with others.

You will be passionate about viable ways of achieving environmental outcomes.

Salary range: $148,206 pa to $186,317 pa.  Appointment within this range will be based on skills and experience.
