What you will do
The Land Management Officer (Central) is to ensure compliance with sustainable land management statutes and NZDF objectives for the Defence Estate in the central region with a particular focus on the following training areas: Waiouru Military Training Area, Raumai Air Weapons Range and Mako Mako Defence Ammunition Depot.
In this role you are part of the Environmental Services (ES) section within the Defence Estate & Infrastructure (DEI) Group. The primary focus of ES is on managing risks associated with environmental assets on NZDF administered land. In the Land Management role you will primarily be managing the biodiversity and biosecurity aspects of the fauna and flora within the Training Areas through co-ordinating, setting up and managing local contracts and providing technical advice to the wider DEI and NZDF user units.
What we need
We are seeking a self-motivated person with a strong understanding of New Zealand’s biodiversity and biosecurity from social, ecological and legislative perspectives. You will bring practical knowledge on general ecological management, pest plant and animal control practice and on environmental contracting in the New Zealand context.
Having worked in land and/or pest management for the last few years you will have experience in developing and leading a programme of work, which in turn has led to you gaining some good project management skills. You have also engaged, worked with and managed contractors and consultants on environmental projects.
You are comfortable working in the outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and are able to successfully navigate through areas of difficult terrain/vegetation where there are no tracks. You are comfortable working alone but with suitable safety equipment and systems as back up. You are also comfortable working in the vicinity of military activities and equipment where the risks are systematically managed to ensure your personal safety.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential in this role as you will work across a diverse and wide range of Governmental and non-Governmental organisations, people and backgrounds. You will have particular skills and experience in negotiating outcomes and problem solving – sometimes in trying circumstances. Needless to say you have very good technical writing skills and can produce concise reports. Having a good level of computer skills especially within the Microsoft suite you are also familiar with collecting, collating and analysing spatial, operational and biological data and can undertake basic statistical analysis.
