New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) | Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa protects New Zealand against threats to the border. Do you want to make a positive difference to the protection of New Zealand’s border from serious threats, the facilitation of legitimate trade and travel, and the collection of customs and excise revenue on behalf of the Crown?

Reporting to the Chief Legal Counsel, Operations, we are looking for a Legal Counsel to join the Legal Operations team, based in our Auckland office.

You will work across many exciting legal areas affecting Customs, including law enforcement, national security, drugs and other prohibited goods, and tax/revenue collection. The Legal Operations team provides legal advice on use of powers, human rights, revenue collection, and information sharing.

You will provide expert advice on a wide range of legal matters affecting Customs and ensure the delivery of high quality advice and professional service.

 To be successful as a Legal Counsel you will:

  • have excellent legal research, statutory interpretation, and opinion writing skills;
  • build strong relationships to work in partnership with officers, managers, other government departments, and external partners;
  • currently hold or eligible to hold a New Zealand practising certificate; and
  • have, one or more years post qualification experience and a genuine interest in customs law and revenue legislation.

To join Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident*. Because of the nature of Customs’ work, you must have a clear Police record. Organisational security clearances are mandatory and are, conducted by Customs before job offers are, made. You are also required to pass a drug test.
