  • Location: Wellington – Wairarapa
  • Date Advertised: 31-JAN-20
  • Job Reference: NZ/C2/20/23
  • Job Title: Linux Engineer
  • Business Unit:
  • Division:
  • Summary:
  • Are you passionate about Linux, data and IT in general?
  • Keen to develop enthusiasm in a new and exciting environment?
  • Do you feel like you could be advancing your skills?

If the answer to these questions is yes, you need to seriously consider working for us at our Wellington office!

This opportunity will give you the chance to expand into other technology areas while being part of an organisation that is committed to the security and well-being of New Zealand.

Our Technology Directorate delivers technology for the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB), New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) and the wider security and intelligence sector. Our purpose is to ensure that mission requirements are met today and in the future – realising positive outcomes for New Zealand.

What you’ll bring to the position:

  • A passion for Linux and IT including system admin skills
  • Hopefully some formal training such as a tertiary qualification, but we’re interested in relevant work experience or even a long term obsession
  • Enthusiasm for solving complex IT problems
  • Enjoyment working in a supportive team environment

We refer to a person with this expertise as a Cryptologic Engineer.  Don’t let the word ‘Cryptologic’ spook you (see what we did there).  It’s not code breaking but you can expect to do some unique things with your computing / networking / problem solving skills.

What you get from us:

  • Unique and extremely interesting work that you won’t get to do anywhere else
  • Career and development opportunities
  • Competitive salary appropriate to qualifications and experience
  • Private medical insurance and vision care benefits
  • 20 days’ annual leave plus additional leave entitlements
  • Free inhouse gym

These are some of the skills that the successful applicant will have (not all of them, but we’re always hopeful):

  • Linux system administration (CentOS, Ubuntu, RHEL)
  • Scripting and programming
  • Databases (MySQL, Postgres, MariaDB)
  • Foreman, Ansible or similar automation and configuration tools
  • Complex multi-server processing systems (design, deploy, support)
  • Virtualisation (vSphere, libvirt and other hypervisor technologies)
  • Storage area networks and networking across a variety of vendors
  • Interoperability (even if you have to DIY from time to time)

Did you read anything about supporting Windows based systems above?  No you didn’t. That’s a great skill, but the person that gets this job will probably use Linux at home. There’s a really good chance that they have a small (or large) collection of Linux based systems and a complex network topology operating in their garage.  If this describes you, then think of this job as an opportunity to join a like-minded support group.

You will join a technology centric team who collectively do amazing things with some serious computing, but you should also be comfortable solving complex problems on your own. You know that git and subversion can mean more than one thing, PKI could be part of a KPI and you are quite happy to roll up your sleeves and bust out your strace skills when the going gets tough.

We’re a little bit different. The work is always challenging and it’s important for the security of New Zealand.
