There is the potential for world-leading work in the areas of rethinking plastics, product stewardship, reviewing the Waste Minimisation Act 2008, container refund scheme, the next steps in recycling, and more.

Aotearoa New Zealand and the world are waking up to the problems being created by our current approach to managing waste.

The Ministry for the Environment – Manatū Mō Te Taiao is responsible for leading the Government’s work in this challenging area, which has major implications for our environment, economy and how we live our lives.

The Waste and Resource Efficiency Directorate of the Ministry is expanding to meet this challenge through an ambitious and cutting-edge work programme.

We are looking to appoint policy analysts, senior analysts and principal analysts, as soon as possible.

Skills and experience

We need people with:

  • experience in policy development and design
  • good understanding of central government processes, including Cabinet decision-making and legislative change
  • the ability to deliver quality work in a fast-paced environment
  • a desire to think creatively to achieve results
  • excellent written and oral communication skills
  • the confidence to build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders, across diverse groups
  • ability to take responsibility for and lead pieces of work, to distil clarity out of ambiguity, and to manage time and competing priorities effectively
  • technical and research skills
  • curiosity and openness to understanding and applying te ao Māori. 

Most importantly you will be passionate about looking for innovative, realistic and commercially viable ways of achieving environmental outcomes.
