About the role
This role is critical to our mission. The Manager Air Transport leads a team which is responsible for the safety oversight of fixed wing air transport operations in New Zealand, and overseas by New Zealand operators. Leadership and management capability is essential to ensure the unit has the capability, resources, coaching and direction to perform their important safety role well.
The Manager Air Transport must be able to effectively manage the safety oversight of air transport participants, by leading a team of specialists and administration staff who conduct certification, monitoring and inspection activities. The Manager ensures the unit employs rigorous analysis and makes rational judgements to identify aviation safety risks, and then targets resources efficiently and effectively to address these risks.
Success in the role requires an ability to collaborate with other Authority personnel to identify and address problems or opportunities. It requires constructive engagement with aviation participants and other external stakeholders to positively influence safety outcomes.
The Manager is required to lead and embed quality assurance and continual improvement within the unit. Unit activities and relevant CAA processes are regularly reviewed and improved. Changes are identified and implemented through regular engagement with unit and Authority personnel, where staff are empowered to provide input and feedback.
What we’re looking for
Proven aviation experience and knowledge as a senior international airline command pilot and flight examiner or comprehensive aviation management experience.
Experience in airline operational risk management or experience working in a regulatory or certification environment.
Broad based knowledge of the New Zealand aviation system and a comprehensive understanding of the New Zealand Aviation legislative and regulatory framework and other statutory requirements.
Leadership traits necessary for this is role include: resilience (awareness of challenges and the impact it has on others and actively managing them); self-awareness (encourages feedback on own performance and self-assessing and adapting own approach); honesty and courageousness (willing to have difficult conversations, model the right behaviour by walking the talk, and challenging and supporting others to do the same); and curiosity (always seeking to gain a deeper understanding).
Ideally this Manager will have experience in successfully leading a team through organisational change.
