  • Summary:

Manager, Inquiry Facilitation, Waitangi Tribunal Unit, Wellington

The Waitangi Tribunal is a permanent commission of inquiry charged with making recommendations on claims brought by Māori relating to Tiriti o Waitangi.  It holds a unique place in the New Zealand constitutional framework. The Tribunal’s work includes registering claims, conducting and analysing research, liaising with claimants and other parties, and writing reports.

The Ministry of Justice seeks a manager for the Inquiry Facilitation team to support the Waitangi Tribunal to complete its historic inquiry programme, promptly address urgency applications and advance its kaupapa inquiry programme for contemporary claims. The Manager Inquiry Facilitation is a core member of the leadership team and manages a team of skilled and dedicated staff.

Strong applicants will have experience leading operational teams in the Government sector and be comfortable managing competing priorities and a challenging work programme. Whilst a legal qualification is not a pre-requisite, an understanding of the principals and processes of the justice system is, especially as they pertain to the Treaty. Experience working with judiciary would be an advantage.

Given the nature of this role, experience in working with Māori groups and organisations is important. Proven competence in influencing at senior levels, and the intellectual agility and creativity to challenge assumptions on how things are done will also position you well for consideration.

The salary range for this position is $115,934 – $163,671.

Joining the Ministry of Justice means you will become part of an inclusive organisation that values you and the communities we serve. It’s important to us that our workplace is one where our people feel healthy and safe, supported and able to be themselves at work. We value respect as the foundation for building a positive workplace culture where diversity is welcomed and celebrated.
