The Energy & Resource Markets branch is responsible for leading the management and responsible development of New Zealand’s energy and resource sector, from the upstream development of our countries petroleum and mineral assets to the downstream management of energy markets.

An exciting opportunity has been created for an experienced people leader to join the Energy & Resource Markets branch as the Manager, Petroleum Operations.

The Manager, Petroleum Operations is a leadership position within the Energy & Resource Markets branch and reports to the National Manager, Petroleum & Minerals. The role is responsible for leading the Petroleum Operations team to support the management of New Zealand’s petroleum assets to generate the greatest possible value for New Zealand while also managing risks to the Crown.

In this role you will be part of the Petroleum & Minerals leadership team and have the opportunity to support the National Manager, Petroleum & Minerals in setting the team’s strategic direction. The Manager Petroleum Operations also has a strong focus on operational delivery and will be supported by experienced subject matter experts. 


To be successful in this position you will have the following skills and experience:

  • In-depth knowledge of regulatory management and stewardship best practice
  • Proven experience leading a team of technical experts
  • The ability to develop trust and credibility with senior stakeholders across both the public and private sectors
  • Demonstrated ability to manoeuvre through complex issues effectively and efficiently
  • Experience working in the natural resources sector would be advantageous
