Help shape the future of Education

At the Ministry of Education, we work together to shape an education system that delivers equitable and excellent outcomes.

Our organisation is made up of more than 3,000 talented and committed people around New Zealand, from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures.

While we work in different groups and on different things, we all strive every day to make the biggest difference we can for every child, young person and adult student in our education system.

About our group and team

Learning Support is a critical part of the Sector Enablement and Support Group in the Ministry. We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education. One in five children and young people receive some form of learning support throughout their early learning and schooling education.

The Service Support Team provides advice and guidance to Ministers, national and regional staff, and input into cross agency work to support the development and delivery of evidence-informed services and support. Some of the current portfolios include: school-based wellbeing initiatives, bullying prevention, behavioural intervention and students at risk of disengagement.

About this role

This is a key role working across the Ministry’s national and regional offices and with other agencies.

This role manages a team of advisors and specialist staff in national office which focuses on delivery and operational policy which support initiatives and programmes that foster positive education environments and wellbeing for individuals and schools that are culturally responsive. The team supports strengthening inclusion for all children and young people with a focus on learners who are at risk of not achieving educational success without additional support.

Our Learning Support specialists around the country work closely with families, whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.

We also directly provide Learning Support for around 40,000 children and young people.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a difference to the education achievement of children and young people in this busy role.

About you

We are looking for a manager with proven experience who can lead a team of advisers and specialists and support the Ministry to meet our Learning Support service obligations.

This role is a challenging and rewarding one, working with senior managers and staff across the Ministry of Education and the offices of our Ministers. The Manager Service Support will join a close knit team of managers and staff in the Service Delivery function committed to providing great service to our customers and the public.

If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, enjoy working on a diverse range of subject matter and have an inquiring mind, then we would like to hear from you. In return we will provide you with both a dynamic place to work and opportunities to further develop your skills and experience.

Use your specialist skills and experience to help maximise learning and promote social inclusion for children and young people with learning support needs.

Are you ready to make a difference?

We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds, including Māori, Pacific and those with disabilities, who will enrich our understanding of the education system.

As a government agency, the Ministry is committed to keeping to the Treaty of Waitangi’s guiding principles in our work for and with Māori students, their whānau, hapū and iwi.
