About the role

New Zealand Police operate a centralised model for media liaison and communication services and is seeking a Media Advisor for the Police Media Centre in Police National Headquarters, Wellington.


NZ Police has the largest media demand of any Government department and receives over 100 media queries every day. As a Media Advisor you will be managing these media queries and relationships with media outlets nationally. You will be self-managing, confident, and calm under pressure. You will also need to have sound judgement and can think critically.

This role works on a rostered shift basis as the Police Media Centre operates seven days a week from 6am to 11pm.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Liaising with media and district and executive staff
  • Preparing media responses and media monitoring
  • Reporting and developing content for social media
  • Assisting with media conferences

  • A good understanding of the New Zealand media and social media environment
  • Experience in a communications team or with media/social media
  • Understanding of the machinery of government is beneficial
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance to secret level
  • Available for rostered shift work: the media centre operates seven days a week
  • Available for rostered work for after-hours calls for urgent issues
  • Willingness to participate in wider all-of-Government communications responses for critical incident and counter terrorism events
  • Travel as required and sometimes at short notice
  • Relevant qualifications in communications and journalism is desirable
