Molecular Microbiology Scientist

ESR is a Crown Research Institute, working with and for clients and stakeholders to deliver enhanced scientific research services for the economic, environmental and social wellbeing of New Zealand. ESR has approximately 400 staff with sites across New Zealand.
We are currently seeking someone with a great attitude and the skills to match to take up a 2 year fixed term fulltime role within our Health & Environment team in Christchurch.
Your new role
Reporting to the Manager, Research & Development, you would be responsible for the development and implementation of science that produces impacts for New Zealand in the areas of public health, water and food safety. Within this broad mandate, you will be involved in implementing new methodologies, developing and delivering research projects, and the application of this expertise to address public health issues as well as challenges affecting water and food industries. Central to this role will be pushing the boundaries for the detection and characterisation of microorganisms in a range of matrices.
What you’ll need to succeed
The ideal candidate will have a PhD, and post-doctoral experience with knowledge and practical expertise in microbiology, quantitative PCR and sequencing technologies including metagenomics and genome sequencing, You will be comfortable working in the laboratory, have strong design and analysis skills, and be able to communicate the science in a range of forums. Most of all you will need a positive, can do attitude, a willingness to learn and to contribute within a team environment.
