We are looking for a Natural Hazards Risk Modeller with experience and passion in natural hazard risk, loss modelling and impact evaluation bringing strong skills in analytical modelling, statistics and programming to the team.The Risk and Engineering team sits within the Society and Infrastructure Department in GNS Science and collaborates with other teams across GNS Science as well as those external to GNS. The core expertise of the Risk and Engineering team includes risk assessment and loss modelling of the built environment, risk management solutions, and assessment of impacts on the well-being of society. The team interacts with the hazard modelling, planning and policy and social and behavioural science teams to play a key role in offering quantified risk assessment approaches to support decision making and risk communication.We are seeking a Natural Hazard Risk Modeller with a high quality analytical bent towards risk and impact modelling and experience in inter-disciplinary research areas. The person we are seeking will ideally have: a relevant postgraduate (Masters/ Doctorate) qualification with three or more years of work experience in statistical and computational modelling for risk and impact evaluation in natural hazardsTechnical programming skills (e.g. Python/Java)Proficiency in statistical modelling and some experience in optimisation and stochastic modellingA broad understanding of the inter-disciplinary areas related to multi-hazard risk modelling, loss modelling and disaster risk managementSome experience in leading/contributing to national and international disaster risk related projectsStrong collaborative team and relationship management skillsA track record in scientific publications and/or end-user applicationsAbout GNS ScienceGNS Science, Te Pū Ao, is New Zealand’s leading provider of Earth, geoscience and isotope research and consultancy services.
