We are looking for a Nursery Technician keen to join our dedicated team. A person who is passionate about horticulture eager to contribute to the research and development of activities which contribute to science that really makes a difference to the New Zealand forestry industry. This role will also include administration our crop management software and associated inputs, reporting and peripherals.

Who are we? 

Scion is a Crown Research Institute who specialises in research, science and technology development for the forestry industry, wood products, and wood-derived materials. We lead new technology development for renewables, bioproducts and energy and the establishment of a broader based bioeconomy.

What does the role entail?

Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will: support the Scion Nursery research team and other research teams across Scion to maintain, grow and test plants with experimental designs and treatments . Conduct field & e-data collection, individual-tree measurement and labelling, including assisting data acquisition and management, seed collection, foliage sampling and sample processing and management of the crop management system. Administration of our crop management system will include data entry, workplan reporting, inventory oversight, liaising with finance on invoicing and ordering and supporting the Operations Manager with quotations and other general administrative duties.

What are we looking for?

  • NZQA accredited certificate, or higher, in Horticulture (or a related field)  would be advantageous.
  • An independent pro-active person who wants to be part of a team of dedicated scientists and technical staff.
  • Relevant horticultural experience with a passion for plants and good knowledge of horticulture practice.
  • Certification in use of equipment (including tractor and quad-bike), and basic crop husbandry is
  • Willingness to work with nursery chemicals, and to undertake necessary training to become a certified chemical handler.
  • I mportantly an i nterest in science, and a knowledge of experimental design would be advatageous
