What you will do

Join our high performing policy team as a Policy Advisor and support the development and maintenance of a policy environment enabling strategically focused, structured, and positive change. This is your chance to influence how the Defence Estate supports NZDF outcomes and broader government activities.

You will also: 

  • Contribute and advise on strategic policy development;
  • Coordinate and manage team project outcomes;
  • Investigate, research, plan and analyse NZDF infrastructure to identify future policy needs;
  • Advise on emerging impacts and pressures on the estate.

What we need

We want a positive and proactive person to enhance our wider Estate Policy team. You will be a motivated and organised with experience in providing policy advice within a complex environment.

We are also looking for the following skills and experience:  

  • A professional and effective communication style both written and verbal;
  • Can build and maintain influential relationships;
  • Ability to think strategically and laterally;
  • Project management experience. 

Ideally you will have at least 1 – 3 yrs. experience in infrastructure, urban or regional planning and a relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent policy experience.  If you are a recent graduate in social science, geography or planning with at least 1 yrs. experience we would also love to hear from you.

NZDF is undertaking a major regeneration programme developing the Defence Estate in order to achieve our overarching aim of delivering an integrated Defence Force. The Defence Estate is where our personnel live, work and train and comprises of 81,000ha of land, property and infrastructure assets valued at $4.7bn.

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Low level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided in this country continuously for at least the last five years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.

If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
