Our Treaty Capability, Policy Capability and Regulatory Stewardship team sits within the wider Food, Skills and Science Policy Directorate, in the Policy and Trade branch of MPI. The team:

  • Assists MPI to ensure its regulatory systems are of sound quality and meet government requirements and expectations;
  • Supports the development of policy advisers within MPI and coordinates policy quality assurance and measurement processes; and
  • Supports MPI Policy and Trade Branch’s capability to apply Treaty of Waitangi principles and jurisprudence to policy development and engagement with Māori.

We are currently looking for a policy analyst to join our team in our policy capability programme. We are looking for a promising early career policy analyst who is looking to take the next step in their career development. The role will include:

  • supporting and coordinating MPI’s policy capability training programmes
  • coordinating MPI’s Cabinet Paper Committee, which provides quality assurance for cabinet papers produced by the Ministry
  • supporting MPI’s annual quality of policy advice review, a key measure for the Ministry to demonstrate it is meeting government expectations for the quality of policy advice
  • Supporting the development of legislation to maintain and enhance MPI’s regulatory systems.

You will have an eye for detail and be comfortable engaging with internal stakeholders across the Ministry.

The role offers exposure to a wide range of policy issues, processes and teams within the portfolios managed by MPI, as well as the opportunity to participate in cross-government initiatives to promote policy capability and professionalism.
