Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role and our team

We are looking for a high performing Principal Adviser to join our team working on a range of issues at the heart of the performance of New Zealand’s primary sectors. MPI’s Agriculture, Marine & Plant (AMP) Policy Directorate is responsible for the legislative and regulatory settings to enable primary industries by balancing cooperation and competition.  Within the AMP directorate, the Animal Sector Policy team works on economic and strategic issues to support MPI’s goal of sustainably growing the value of New Zealand’s primary sector exports.

The Animal Sector Policy team provides information, analysis and advice on the performance of New Zealand’s animal-based primary sectors – meat, dairy and wool – across a range of regulatory and non-regulatory issues. We work across issues and opportunities facing these sectors to support their sustainable performance for the good of New Zealand. We are an exciting, vibrant and fast-moving place to work and we are looking for someone who’ll thrive in this environment. Current strategic projects for the team include investigating the legislative settings necessary to support animal genetic improvement, and reviewing regulatory barriers to e-commerce exports across all primary sectors.

We are seeking a smart, curious, and enthusiastic Principal Adviser who can provide well-reasoned and informed advice and analysis to shape our work on complex issues.  We need a thought leader who will challenge conventional thinking and use their analytical skills and ability to build productive relationships and networks to inform policy making. This is an exciting position here at MPI, and offers the opportunity to really make an impact while carving out your own space.

  • A creative problem solver with a focus on process improvement;
  • Experienced in developing staff by coaching and mentoring to achieve programme outcomes;
  • Good with people and has proven experience in developing and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including senior leaders and peers;
  • Able to use initiative and persevere in order to perform and support others to manage and deliver in high pressure situations.
